When Is Ramadan 2027? (1448 Expected Date)
Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin on 8 February 2027. That is the date both the tabular calculation and the Umm al-Qura calendar point to. But notice the word "expected": the moon sighting on the 29th of Sha'ban شعبان gets the final say, and it can shift the start by a day.
Why "expected" and not certain
Every predicted Islamic date is a forecast until the crescent is actually seen. Astronomers can compute the moon's position to the minute, but whether the thin crescent is visible from a given city on a given evening depends on weather, dust, the moon's height at sunset, and plain human eyesight. So 8 February 2027 is the date the math gives us, and it is very likely correct, but no honest source will call it final four months early.
This is not a weakness of the calendar. It is the calendar working as designed: a lunar month begins when the new moon is witnessed, not when a formula says so. Treat every Ramadan date you see online as expected, including this one.
How the 8 February date was worked out
Two independent methods land on the same day here, which is why confidence is high. The tabular Islamic calendar, with its fixed 30-year cycle of 11 leap years, counts forward to 1 Ramadan 1448 on 8 February 2027. The Umm al-Qura calendar, computed from predicted crescent visibility over Mecca, agrees: 8 February 2027.
When the arithmetic method and the astronomical method converge, the sighted date usually matches too. It is not guaranteed, clouds do not read calendars, but agreement between the two systems is about as strong a signal as prediction gets. You can watch the date approach on our Ramadan countdown or see the full month laid out in the 1448 Hijri calendar.
When the real confirmation comes
The confirmation happens on the evening of 29 Sha'ban 1448. Moon-sighting committees across the Muslim world, from Pakistan's Ruet-e-Hilal Committee to Saudi Arabia's courts, will ask people to look west after sunset for the new crescent of Ramadan رمضان.
Two outcomes are possible. If credible witnesses see the crescent, Ramadan begins the next morning and the first fast is 8 February. If the sky is cloudy or the crescent is too young to see, Sha'ban completes 30 days and Ramadan starts a day later, on 9 February. That is the entire mechanism, and it is why I always tell people to wait for their own country's announcement before making final Eid or travel plans.
The last ten nights and Laylat al-Qadr
If Ramadan begins as expected on 8 February 2027, the month runs roughly to 8 or 9 March, and the last ten nights fall around 27 February to 8 March 2027. These are the nights Muslims value most, because Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree, is sought among the odd nights of the last ten: the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th nights.
A quick word of caution from experience. Do not carve the odd-night dates in stone months ahead. If the moon sighting shifts Ramadan's start by a day, every night shifts with it. Mark the expected window in your calendar now, then adjust once the crescent is confirmed. The Ramadan 1448 page will carry the confirmed dates once announcements are made.
Many mosques also hold i'tikaf, the spiritual retreat in the mosque, during these last ten nights. If you are considering it, speak to your mosque early: spaces fill up, and the retreat follows the same confirmed dates as everything else. Planning around the expected window is fine. Just stay flexible until the moon is sighted.
When Eid al-Fitr 1448 falls
Eid al-Fitr, on 1 Shawwal شوال, is expected on 9 March 2027 according to the Umm al-Qura calendar. The tabular calendar points to 10 March instead, a normal one-day method difference of the kind that happens regularly between calculation systems.
As always, the Shawwal crescent sighting at the end of Ramadan settles it. Some years the whole world celebrates together; other years neighboring countries land a day apart. Either way, follow your local announcement. You can track the approach on our Eid al-Fitr countdown, and if you want to double-check any date yourself, the Hijri date converter is there for exactly that.
Why Ramadan keeps moving earlier each year
If Ramadan feels like it arrives earlier every year, that is because it does. The Hijri year is 354 days long (355 in a leap year), roughly 11 days shorter than the 365-day solar year. So every Islamic date drifts about 11 days earlier on the Gregorian calendar each year.
That drift is also why Ramadan cycles through the seasons. Within about 33 years it makes a full loop: winter fasts with short days, then summer fasts with long ones, then back again. Ramadan 2027 falling in February means short, cool fasting days for the northern hemisphere, a welcome stretch after the long summer Ramadans of the past decade. The lunar calendar does not care about seasons at all, which is precisely why every Muslim on earth, north or south, shares the same Ramadan.
Frequently asked questions
When is Ramadan 2027?
Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin on 8 February 2027. Both the tabular and Umm al-Qura calculations agree on this date, but it stays expected until the crescent is sighted on the 29th of Sha'ban.
When is Eid al-Fitr 2027?
Eid al-Fitr 1448 (1 Shawwal) is expected on 9 March 2027 according to Umm al-Qura, or 10 March on the tabular calendar. The exact day will be fixed by the Shawwal moon sighting at the end of Ramadan.
Why is Ramadan 2027 earlier than Ramadan 2026?
The Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, so every Islamic date moves roughly 11 days earlier each Gregorian year. Ramadan 1448 lands in February after Ramadan 1447 fell in mid-February to March.
When will the Ramadan 2027 date be confirmed?
On the evening of 29 Sha'ban 1448, moon-sighting committees across the Muslim world will look for the new crescent. If it is seen, fasting starts the next morning; if not, Sha'ban completes 30 days and Ramadan begins a day later.
When are the last ten nights of Ramadan 2027?
If Ramadan begins as expected on 8 February 2027, the last ten nights fall around 27 February to 8 March 2027, with the odd nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, 29th) being the nights when Laylat al-Qadr is sought.
So: expect Ramadan 1448 to begin on 8 February 2027, expect Eid al-Fitr around 9 March, and wait for the crescent before treating either as certain. Plan with the predictions, fast with the announcement, and the dates will take care of themselves.
